What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar yoga is named after, and was developed by, BKS Iyengar. It is a style of yoga that focuses on detail, sequencing, precision and alignment of yoga postures. Through this clear and continuous attention Iyengar yoga can show us how to improve our physical and mental well being.

Iyengar yoga often makes use of props, such as belts, blocks and blankets, in performing the postures. These props can help beginner students or those with physical limitations to perform postures correctly, minimising the risk of injury or strain. Props can also be used to increase a stretch and to bring awareness to different parts of the body.

A flexible, more toned, more active body can help to reduce mental disturbances such as anxiety, inability to concentrate and insomnia, which can be caused by physical imbalance and ill health.

The purpose of all yoga is to quieten the movements of our mind and start to bring greater self awareness. The postures, practiced with awareness and focus, are often described as ‘meditation in action’.

Benefits of Iyengar Yoga

Builds Strength & Flexibility

Iyengar yoga places emphasis on precision, body alignment and the sequences in which asanas are practised. Minor adjustments improve alignment and muscles that are often ignored become stronger. Postures are held so muscles strengthen, relax and lengthen, while awareness is raised.

Corrects Posture

The focus on precision and the use of props helps correct bad posture and improves balance bringing increased stability, co-ordination and awareness to the body.

Improves Wellbeing

Iyengar yoga encourages relaxation of the whole body, which combats fatigue. It can improve your circulation and mental focus, helping to steady the breath and quieten the mind.
