What can you expect from a therapy class?

In these therapy medical classes, you will be given a personalised program that is specifically tailored to address your individual health concerns or medical conditions. They will be very small classes (often with 1-1 support) taught by a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher who has received specialised training in therapeutic yoga and is knowledgeable about anatomy, physiology, and common medical conditions.

The teacher will work with you to understand your specific health concerns and to design a practice that is appropriate for your needs. Extensive use of props such as belts, blocks, bricks, chairs, bolsters, blankets and hands on adjustments will help support and modify the poses to make them accessible and safe for you.

Overall, you can expect an Iyengar Yoga therapy medical class to be a safe and supportive environment that is focused on helping you manage your health concerns and improve your overall well-being through the practice of yoga.

The Long Covid Iyengar Yoga pilot study

Gerda Bayliss had Long Covid for over 2 years. During the pandemic she initiated a pilot study exploring how Iyengar yoga can be helpful for Long Covid. The Long Covid working group included experienced Iyengar yoga teachers and researchers: Lois Steinberg, Sheila Haswell, Alan Brown, Laura Potts, Suzanne Newcombe and Myka Ransom. The project was coordinated entirely online and included 51 participants with Long Covid and 102 volunteer Iyengar yoga teachers. The study results indicate that Iyengar yoga can help alleviate symptoms. More studies will hopefully follow. Gerda is keen to share how helpful the right Iyengar yoga practice can be in coping with a long-term chronic illness. There are a few articles below about the study and Gerda’s experience from a yoga perspective.

  • "In whatever position one is in, or in whatever condition in life one is placed, one must find balance. "

    BKS Iyengar

  • "life means to be living. Problems will always be there. When they arise navigate through them with yoga."

    BKS Iyengar

  • "In the depth of winter I finally learned that in me was an invincible summer"

    Albert Camus

  • Within you is a stillness, a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time to be yourself"

    Herman Hess

  • True quiet means keeping still when the time has come to keep still, and going forward when the time has come to go forward. In this way rest and movement are in agreement with the demands of the time, and thus there is light in life.

    I Ching

  • "Yoga is when every cell of the body sings the song of the soul"
